I've written a number of posts on the power of positive thinking and tricks to tame your inner mean self and negative self-talk. This is all in an effort to help us retrain our thinking patterns to be healthy and positive. These efforts have had me explore meditation and helped me discover the many benefits to meditation.
Since I didn't know how to meditate, I took a class at the Dallas Yoga Center. The class went though a number of techniques, one of them being repeating mantras. I found I prefer repeating mantras in my mind as my form of meditation at home. There are many lovely ways to meditate with sound and gongs, breathing and counting. I can find any of them beneficial, but when I'm at home or stuck at a stoplight, I find I can focus on a mantra or affirmation for a couple of minutes and reap great centering benefits.
A couple of months ago, my friend shared Louise Hay's book with me, I Can Do It!. It is a book that focuses solely on the benefits of using positive affirmations in every area of your life. It offers a number of affirmations for health, prosperity, relationships, and more. In her book, Louise talks about the benefits of mirror work. This is saying your affirmations to yourself while looking in the mirror.
I've repeated my affirmations in the mirror, and I've found other opportunities to repeat them. I will say affirmations while waiting in a line, when riding the bike at the gym or swimming laps in the pool. I will say affirmations on my walk into the office. There are so many opportunities to say them. I even recently discovered how powerful saying affirmations could be after having an experience that wasn't so positive. When you affirm yourself after a negative experience, it can change your energy and your mood to get you back on track in no time.
To help you get going, I want to share a few of my general affirmations with you.
- I am whole, perfect, strong, loving, harmonious, and happy.
- I am the master of my thoughts and emotions
- I release attachment to outcome.
- I trust myself and my intuition.
- My life is free of drama and dysfunction.
- Everything I need and desire is unfolding in my life in the perfect way at the perfect time.
- I am aware of divine guidance at all times.
- From this experience only good will come. All is well.
- Everything is working out for my highest good.
I find these to be very helpful to memorize and repeat at any given time. I will make up an affirmation to suit a particular moment, too. I hope these will help you get going or grow your use of affirmations today because you can!
