I think I’m one of the hardest workers out there because I’m busy all the time. Being constantly busy can be deceitful to the true level of effort a person puts into work. Do you focus on one or two things and do them really well, or do you spread yourself thin and do many things not very well? You’d still feel like you’re working, but you may not be accomplishing much or as much as you could. I know I’ve experienced all of these things when I desire to excel at one or two things.
Additionally, when you are at a task, do you make excuses to not take things to the next level? I will often have an internal conversation that goes something like this, “You can stop now and you’ll pass. Or, you can put more effort into this to make what you’re doing exceptional.” Then, I will make a few excuses about why that isn’t necessary. After that I argue with myself for a while, I decide I need to put everything into it out of respect for myself and others that are connected to me. Being aware of my internal dialogue definitely helps me ward off laziness.
When I consider my job, my writing and dancing tango. I want to always make that choice to take it to the next level and push myself. I’ll often think I’m doing that when I get a nudge from an outsider that shows me I can do more that I initially thought. That’s what coaches and teachers are good at doing. They push you beyond your self-inflicted limits. When I see I can do more, I wonder if my comfortable place is really just being lazy. I want to know what to do when I’m feeling lazy and need to get motivated.
I don’t want to be lazy or be thought of as lazy. Consequently, I’ve started thinking about this more and more every time I don’t feel up to something. I can choose to be exceptional or average. I think we all want to be exceptional. I start to make up my mind before a project, class or event that I will approach it with the intention of putting everything into it. If I do less than my best, I only create stress and start to seek how to eliminate anxiety.
What do you do to push yourself to excel? HOw do you stop laziness? Go beyond your limits with me today because you can.
