I don’t know if you’ve discovered the power and benefits of meditation yet. I have been meditating for the last several months and have been delighted at what I’ve
discovered. I thought meditation was a simple thing to do before I actually took a class. I learned you can have an intention for your meditation and that there are different techniques to meditate. When you start to learn about something, it seems natural to begin to develop expectations around your meditation practice.
I recently heard meditation guru davidji speak about the myths surrounding meditation and the signs that meditation is working. He gave the following five examples of a fruitful meditation practice.
You are forgiving more people. If forgiveness and releasing hurt comes more easily, your meditation is having a positive effect on you. I have had a hard time with forgiveness in the past because no matter how much releasing I tried to do, I could never erase the memories of the hurt. Through meditation I learned to approach a place of acceptance more quickly and learned to focus on the lessons I learned more than the pain.
You love yourself more unconditionally. I’ve been learning the beautiful relationship that is love with self without narcissism. Meditation helps you tune into self in a way that you stay connected. I find myself repeatedly having in-love moments where I’m so grateful for who I am and glad to be me. Meditation can help grow this healthy, self-love emotion.
Are you looking towards limitless beliefs? I know we all have dreams and desires that are often matched by a limiting belief about why that thing can’t happen for us. Meditation can help you remove the limiting beliefs and come to a place where anything is possible. If you meditate on your desire as absolute fact, it will help that dream manifest.
Are you apologizing more? Learning to own and accept your wrongs is another sign that your ego is getting out of the way to allow spirit to take over. Ego needs to be right and spirit can act out of love. Apologizing for your wrongs with an open heart can be a huge sign your meditation is benefiting your life.
Are you living your life with compassion? Do you feel sympathy and empathy for others, or are you looking to blame people for the wrong in the world? Are you compassionate towards your friend and neighbor? Are you helping that person and giving of your time, efforts and energy without expecting in return? Do you love more unconditionally? If any of these are true for you, then your meditation is working and producing benefits in your life.
These are all subtle benefits that add up to a major arc in your life’s journey. Meditation may seem frightening at first if it is foreign or you may go into it expecting a major change or a-ha moment during the meditation. If you can spend a little time quieting the mind each day, you can see wonderful outcomes in your life. I encourage you to meditate and benefit from it because you can!
